Geographical Position
It is a coastal city in the south of China and adjacent to Hong Kong. It is located to the south of the Tropic of Center, between East Longitude 113°43′ to 114°38′, and Northern Latitude 22°24′ to 22°52′. It is at the south of Guangdong Province and the east bank of the Pearl River Estuary, close to Daya Bay and Mirs Bay in the east, adjacent to Pearl River Estuary and Lingdingyang Bay in the west, connected to Shenzhen River and Hong Kong in the south, and borders on Dongguan and Huizhou in the north. Its vast sea area connects the South China Sea and the Pacific.

Natural Resources
The city area is 1997.47 square kilometers; within the drainage area of over 1 square kilometer, there are 310 rivers, which are divided into 9 drainage basins. The total area of marine water in Shenzhen is 1145 square kilometers. The vast sea area of Shenzhen connects the South China Sea and the Pacific Ocean. The total length of the coastline is 261km. It boasts of famous beaches, such as Dameisha Beach Park, Xiaomeisha Resort, Xichong and Jidiaosha, and natural ecological protection zones, such as Dapeng Peninsula National Geopark, Shenzhen Bay Mangrove Forest, Wutong Mountain County Park, and Neilingding Island.

Natural Climate
Shenzhen has the mild and agreeable subtropical monsoon climate, with abundant rainfall. The annual average temperature is 22.4℃ and the frost-free season lasts for 355 days. Its rainfall is abundant; it is the rain season from April to September per year, with the average annual rainfall of 1933.3 mm and the sunlight length of 2120.5 hours.

City Tree and Flower
In 1986, litchi and bougainvillea were selected by Shenzhen citizens as the “city tree” and “city flower” of Shenzhen. In 2007, mangrove was rated as the second (city tree) of Shenzhen.

History Of Cities
The name of “Shenzhen” derived from the historical record of the year of 1410 (the 8th year of Yongle in the Ming Dynasty), which was built in the first year of the Qing Dynasty. The local dialect called the ditch in the field as “Zhen” or “Yong”. Shenzhen was named after one deep ditch by the village. Although the special economic zone of Shenzhen has the development history of more than 30 years, yet it has the human activity history of more than 6700 years (there were aboriginals that multiplied and lived on the land of Shenzhen in the mid of the Neolithic Age), the shire county history of more than 1700 years, the history of Nantou City and Dapeng City of more than 600 years and the immigration history of the Hakka of more than 300 years. In 1979, the Central Government and Guangdong Province determined to establish Shenzhen City. In August 1980, NPC Standing Committee approved the setup of the special economic zone in Shenzhen City. Shenzhen is also named the City of Pengcheng. Since the establishment of the special zone, Shenzhen has been soaring high and moving ahead bravely as the roc.

Administrative Division
Shenzhen is the provincially administered municipality of Guangdong Province, China, and national sub-provincial municipality with independent planning status. Shenzhen governs 9 administrative regions and 1 new district: Futian District, Luohu District, Yantian District, Nanshan District, Bao’an District, Longgang District, Longhua District, Pingshan District, Guangming District and Dapeng New District. Since July 1, 2017, the scope of Shenzhen special economic zone was extended to the whole city.

Population Composition
After the establishment of Shenzhen City, its population developed rapidly. Up to the end of 2017, it had the permanent resident population of 12.5283 million, increasing 550,800 people than the end of last year, with the increase rate of 4.6%, including the registered population of 4.3472 million. The reform and opening up policy and the special geographical environment led to the open, tolerant and innovative Shenzhen culture. It has become a new immigrant city and formed the unique immigrant culture. In 2002, Shenzhen had 55 minority groups, so it was the second national big city that gathered 56 nations besides Beijing. In recent years, Shenzhen has been rated as the “Chinese city with the most economic vigor” and “the most popular city of migrant workers” in China. It is the city of vitality most suitable for domestic and foreign talents to start up their business.

Language
Shenzhen takes mandarin as the mainstream language. Many public service organizations, professionals and personages from the industrial and the commercial field may provide services in English; most teenagers may speak English and Cantonese. The city is carrying out the foreign language learning activity entitled “Shenzhen citizens speaking foreign languages” through multiple forms, so as to improve the foreign language popularizing rate of public services, and enhance the foreign language application ability of citizens.

Industrial Structure
The industrial structure highlights “three focuses”: the economic increment should focus on the emerging industry, with the growth contribution rate of 40.9% to GDP; the industry focuses on the advanced manufacturing industry, with the proportion of 70% in the industry; the three industries focus on the modern service industry, with the proportion of 60.5% in GDP. The proportion of the modern service industry in the service industry is increased to more than 70%.

Economic Status
Shenzhen is located at the frontier of Pearl River Delta, so it is the bond and bridge connecting Hong Kong and the mainland of China. It shoulders the important mission of experiment and demonstration in terms of the Chinese institution innovation and opening expansion, and plays an important role in multiple aspects, such as the Chinese high-tech industry, financial service, foreign trade export, marine transportation and creative culture. The economic aggregate of Shenzhen is equal to that of a middle province in China. It ranks the third among the large and medium-sized cities nationwide, so it is one of the cities with the best economic benefit in the mainland of China. In 2017, the economy of Shenzhen continued to maintain the rapid and healthy development tendency. According to the primary accounting, the annual total output value of the city reached 2240 billion yuan, increasing by 8.8%. Its export realized “the top one for 25 years” among national big and medium-sized cities.

Transportation
Shenzhen has the complete ports of water, land, air and railway, and 9 wharves, such as Shekou Wharf and Yantin Wharf, with very developed shipping. It also sets 6 railway stations, including Shenzhen Station, Shenzhen North Railway Station and Shenzhen East Railway Station, with Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong High-speed Rail crossing it. It is an important railway terminal nationwide. Bao’an Airport is a national regional airline hub, with 46 international air lines and 4 Hong Kong-Macao and Taiwan air lines. It is the fourth biggest air harbour and one of the world top 100 airports in China. It is the port city with the most port quantity, the most people of exit and entry, and the biggest traffic flow. It boasts of 15 Type One ports of opening through the approval of the State Council, including Luohu Port, the entry and exit land border port with the biggest passenger flow volume in China, Huanggang Port with 24-hour customs clearance, Futian Port, the first metro port seamlessly connecting the mainland and Hong Kong, and Shenzhen Bay Port, the only land border port of “two inspections in one place”.

Social Security
In 2017, social security in Shenzhen tended to a good prospect and it deepened the construction of “a safe Shenzhen”. According to the third-party evaluation results in terms of the masses’ sense of security and satisfaction of the public security work, Shenzhen ranked the top among 21 prefecture-level cities of the province with the highest scores of 85.18 and 83.59 respectively. In 2017, supported by accurate data integration, Shenzhen Municipal Public Security Bureau created the “Shenzhen Micro” platform of police livelihood, integrated various livelihood service systems within the public security institution and realized the online one-stop, whole-process and intelligent handling of service matters. At present, the platform has 4.16 million registered users, with online handling rate of more than 60%. Meanwhile, it integrates the terminal equipment function of business handling of multiple police classifications, such as population, exit and entry, and traffic police, develops the “all-in-one machine” of livelihood police affairs and provides the zero-distance and 24-hour online services for citizens.
