Cultural and Creative Industries
Shenzhen is the first Chinese city to utilize a culture-based strategy for city development. In 2016, Shenzhen’s cultural and creative industries achieved a value-added industrial output of 110 billion yuan, a growth of 15.4%. Shenzhen is the first city nationwide to win the title of “City of Design” from UNESCO. Design sectors such as industrial design and graphic design are in the vanguard of the nation, and Shenzhen enterprises have led China for multiple years in the number of iF international design awards received. Major industrial parks for the cultural and creative industries include Shenzhen National Cartoon & Animation Industry Base, Shenzhen (Tianmian) “City of Design” Creative Design Industrial Estate, and the Sino-Finnish Design Park. Representative local cultural and creative enterprises include Fantawild Holdings Inc and Newplan.
High and New Technology
Shenzhen is home to a cluster of enterprises spread throughout a variety of high and new technology sectors, of which the electronic information sector is one of the most prominent. In 2017, Shenzhen added 3,193 new national-level high and new technology enterprises, and the city now boasts a total of 11,230 of these enterprises. This has allowed Shenzhen to become an important national center for the conversion of fruitful high-tech research into successful industrial products. Major industrial parks/zones for the high and new technology industry include the Shenzhen High-Tech Industrial Park, the Shenzhen Software Industrial Base, and Shenzhen Cloud Park. Well-known local representatives of the industry include Huawei and ZTE.
Modern Logistics
Shenzhen's logistics industry produced a value-added industrial output of 198.480 billion yuan in 2016, with a growth of 9.4%. Shenzhen currently has over 17,000 logistics enterprises, almost ten of which have operating revenue in excess of ten billion yuan, and the city is also the home of six publicly listed logistics enterprises. Over 80% of supply chain management companies nationwide have their headquarters in Shenzhen, and more than 60 famous international logistics enterprises operate in Shenzhen, including America’s UPS, Germany’s Lufthansa, Denmark’s Maersk, and Cainiao. Some of Shenzhen’s major industrial parks for the logistics industry include the Qianhai Bay Bonded Logistics Park, the Yantian Logistics Park, the Da Konggang Aviation Logistics Park, the Pinghu Logistics Park, and the Huanan Logistics Park. Well-known Shenzhen-based logistics enterprises include S.F. Express and Eternal Asia.
Finance
Financial industry is one of Shenzhen’s pillar industries. In 2017, the value-added industrial output of Shenzhen's financial sector accounted for 15% of the city’s GDP, giving Shenzhen one of the highest financial industry to total GDP ratios among china's mainland cities. Shenzhen is home to the Shenzhen Stock Exchange, and ranks third nationally in total financial assets, local and foreign deposit balances, and lending balance. The city is also home to almost 50,000 VC/PE institutions, with registered capital of approximately three trillion yuan. Districts home to high numbers of financial service enterprises include Futian, Luohu, and the Qianhai Shenzhen-Hong Kong Modern Service Industry Cooperation Zone, the last of which will serve China as a pilot showcase for the futher reform and opening-up policies guiding foreign participation in the financial industry. Two of the well-known Shenzhen-based financial enterprises are China Ping An and China Merchants Bank.

Bioindustry

Shenzhen's bioindustry industry produced 22.236 billion yuan of value-added industrial output in 2016, representing a growth of 13.4%. Shenzhen's bioindustry is growing extremely rapidly (at an average of 20% per year), and the city is a member of the first group of national bioindustry bases in China. The city's biomedical engineering and biopharmaceutical sectors are domestic leaders, and its enterprises and institutions' capabilities in fields such as advanced biomedical engineering, gene sequencing, bioinformatics, and cell therapy have ascended to leading positions globally. Shenzhen’s bio sector already features 300 innovative entities spread across many fields and levels (21 of these are national-level enterprises/entities). Major industrial zones/parks for the bioindustry include Shenzhen International Biovalley, Shenzhen High-Tech Industrial Park, and the Pingshan National Bio-industry Base. Chipscreen and Mindray are two of Shenzhen’s better-known local enterprises in the sector.

New Energy

Shenzhen's new energy sector boasts a complete new energy industry chain that covers everything from equipment manufacturing to energy services. Key fields such as nuclear energy, solar energy, bioenergy, and all-electric automobiles are growing extremely fast. In 2016, Shenzhen’s new energy industry attained value-added industrial output of 59.225 billion yuan, representing a 29.3% growth. Main industrial parks/zones for the new energy industry include Pingshan District New Energy Automobile Industry Base, and Longgang District New Energy Industry Base. BYD Auto and Shenzhen Energy are representative local new energy enterprises.

Internet

Shenzhen is among the first cities approved to establish themselves as national e-commerce model cities. Shenzhen has made this leading position into a sustained growth: in 2016, Shenzhen's Internet industry grew by 15.3%. Major industrial parks/zones for the Internet industry include Shekou Network Valley, Futian International E-Commerce Park, and the Shenzhen Bao’an Internet Industry Base. Tencent and Thunder Networking Technologies are two of Shenzhen’s many well-known local Internet enterprises.

New Materials

Shenzhen’s new materials sector features a complete industrial framework, and key fields such as electronic information materials, new energy materials, biological materials, energy saving construction materials, graphene nanomaterials, and metamaterials are the focus of development. In 2016, Shenzhen’s new materials industry produced a value-added industrial output of 37.3 billion yuan, representing a growth of 19.6%. Major industrial parks for the industry include the Guangming Electronic Communication Materials Zone and the Pingshan Power Cell Materials Zone. Some of Shenzhen’s key local enterprises in the new materials industry include CSG Holding Co., Ltd., Kuang-Chi Institute of Advanced Technology, and BTR.

Next Generation Information Technology

China’s 10 leading electronic information corporations have all established their headquarters or regional headquarters in Shenzhen, and Shenzhen has already become an important manufacturing, R&D, export, and logistics base for China’s IT industry. In 2016, Shenzhen’s next generation information technology industry achieved value-added industrial output of 405.2 billion yuan. This represented a growth of 9.6%, marking another year in which the industry’s speed of growth was more than twice that of GDP over the same period. Shenzhen Software Industrial Park, Shenzhen Bay Technology Ecopark, and Banxuegang Science and Technology City are some of the next generation information technology industry’s main industrial parks in Shenzhen. Representative local IT enterprises include Huawei, ZTE, and Hytera.

Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection

In 2016, Shenzhen’s energy conservation and environmental protection industry produced a value-added industrial output of 40.173 billion yuan, representing a growth of 8.2%. Shenzhen is a domestic leader in fields such as high efficiency energy conservation (high efficiency motor fans, energy-conservation control, etc.), advanced environmental protection (environmental monitoring, wastewater treatment, etc.), and resource recycling (waste-to-energy (WtE), electronic waste recycling, etc.). Major parks/zones for the industry in Shenzhen include the International Low-carbon City and Guangming New District LED Industry Park. Well-known local enterprises include Das Intellitech, Techand, and Dongjiang Environment.

Life Science and Wellness
The value of Shenzhen’s life science and wellness industry’s output has already exceeded 30 billion yuan in 2016, and the city ranks first in the world in its next generation sequencing abilities. Biomedical industry fields such as stem cells, cancer cellular immunotherapy and gene therapy have strong developmental foundations in Shenzhen, and Shenzhen researchers have attained internationally leading positions in some of these fields. Shenzhen’s life science and wellness industry is centered in industrial parks/zones such as Shenzhen International Biovalley and Shenzhen International Low-carbon City. Two of Shenzhen's famed local enterprises in the industry are BGI and Beike Biotechnology.

Marine
In 2016, Shenzhen’s marine industry produced a value-added industrial output of 38.283 billion yuan. Shenzhen's modern marine industrial system comprises of three main sectors—maritime transportation and carriage, offshore oil and gas, and coastal tourism—that are strongly buoyed by Shenzhen’s unique geographical and economic positions. These are supplemented by such emerging marine industries as marine electronic information, marine biology, and high-end marine equipment. Shenzhen is also forging itself into a National Model City for the Development of the Marine Economy and Marine Science. China Merchants Holdings (International) Co., Ltd. and China International Marine Containers (Group) Co., Ltd. are two of the well-known local marine industry enterprises.

Aerospace
Shenzhen's aerospace industry produced a value-added industrial output of 8.468 billion yuan in 2016, representing a growth of 5.8%. Shenzhen’s aviation industry possesses an industry framework that already spans numerous fields (including airworthiness certification research and development, aviation electrical parts, aircraft equipment modules, drones, and airport ground installation manufacturing). The city has also already developed into an important R&D and manufacturing base for the space industry in fields such as micro-satellites and satellite navigation parts and end equipment. Important industrial parks/zones that serve as homes to the aerospace industry in Shenzhen include the Shenzhen Nanshan Aviation Electronics Industrial Park and the Northwestern Polytechnical University’s Aviation Production Base. Well-known local aerospace enterprises include DJI Innovations, AVIC International Industrial Holding, and Shenzhen Zero (Xiro).

Robotics
Shenzhen's robotics, wearable device and smart equipment industries produced a value-added industrial output of 48.642 billion yuan in 2016, representing a growth of 20.2%. Shenzhen’s enterprises are domestic technological leaders in fields such as system integration, controllers, servers, multi-sensor fusion, signal processing, and human-machine interaction. Examples of such advanced technology include Foxconn’s robot bodies, Rapoo’s system integration, Inovance’s servers, and Googol’s controllers.

Wearable Device Industry
Shenzhen is home to many enterprises that are domestic leaders in producing wearable devices such as smartwatches and health devices, and equipped with a complete industry chain featuring everything from sensors and flexible parts to interactive solutions, making it China’s largest wearable device R&D and manufacturing base. The city also boasts if the largest number of wearable device enterprises in China, and more than one thousand of these enterprises have operations here; companies such as Huawei and Coolpad, and the products they produce, have already assumed leading positions not only in China, but also throughout the world.

Smart Equipment
The annual output of Shenzhen's smart equipment/device manufacturing industry is valued at approximately 500 billion yuan. Shenzhen is a domestic industry leader for automatic laser welding equipment and PCB circuit board 3D testing equipment. Shenzhen has also witnessed major research and manufacturing breakthroughs for patient/medical monitoring instruments. Outstanding local enterprises in this industry include BGI, which has obtained the first two approvals in China for second generation genome sequencers, and Edan, which has successfully brought the nation’s first self-developed blood-gas biochemical analyzer onto the market.
